Ballylanders too strong for Athea
July 11, 2008
Holders Ballylanders moved a step closer to securing a place in the knockout stages of the Limerick SFC when they powered to a 1-16 to 0-11 victory over Athea at Ballyagran last weekend.
A 12th minute penalty from Kieran O'Callaghan put the champions on their way to a comfortable win which leaves last year's intermediate winners facing a battle to retain their senior status.
Last year's beaten finalists Drom-Broadford continued their impressive form with a 4-12 to 1-6 mauling of Monaleen at Kilmallock. Goals from Gareth Noonan (two), Tom McLoughlin and Seanie Buckley inspired Drom-Broadford to their third straight win and a place in the knockout stages. Without a win to date, Monaleen need to win their last two group games to have any chance of progressing further.
St. Kieran's put a spanner in the works in Group 1 when they defeated a previously unbeaten Newcastle West by 1-8 to 1-6. The Ardagh side's surprise victory puts them back in contention for a quarter-final spot and they won't hold any fears against strugglers Athea and Hospital-Herbertstown in their remaining group games.
Pallasgreen revived their quarter-final hopes with a 1-9 to 1-7 victory over Hospital-Herbertstown, while a fine contribution from substitute Conor Fitzgerald saw Adare recover from a five-point deficit to snatch a 1-13 to 2-10 draw with St. Senan's.
The other scheduled third round tie between Claughaun and Fr Casey's fell victim to the inclement weather.
