Limerick-Offaly clash could be switched
July 08, 2008
Limerick and Munster Council officials will consider switching Saturday's All-Ireland hurling qualifier between Limerick and Offaly from the Gaelic Grounds to Kilmallock if the wet weather of recent weeks continues.
The switch would ensure that the Gaelic Grounds would be in perfect condition for Sunday's Munster SHC final between Clare and Tipperary. Munster Council officials are keeping in close contact with the Limerick county board and alternative arrangements are in place to move the Limerick-Offaly tie away from the Ennis Road venue if heavy rain continues to fall in the coming days.
Limerick PRO Helen Cross said that a potential switch of venue is "totally weather dependent" and is confident that Kilmallock, with a 9,000 capacity, will cope with the fixture if it is needed.
A decision will be taken over the next few days but as things stand, Munster Council officials are worried that the Gaelic Grounds may cut up badly if two games are played there before the big showdown between Tipp and Clare.
The All-Ireland qualifier is fixed for 7pm on Saturday, while Cork and Tipperary meet in the Munster minor final on Sunday afternoon.
