Leinster MHC: Cats cruise to another provincial title

July 06, 2008
Kilkenny 1-19 Wexford 0-12 Kilkenny staged a superb second-half display to kill off Wexford's challenge and land the ESB Leinster MHC title on Sunday in Croke Park. Seven points from Cats' marksman Joe Brennan along with a combined tally of 1-6 from inside forwards Thomas Breen and Martin Gaffney proved decisive for the Champions as they triumphed to a ten-point victory over the Model County. With the wind at their backs, Wexford got off to a decent start in the match with some early points from Paul Morris, but a lethal five minute spell from Kilkenny saw them hit 1-4 with Gaffney finding the net for his side on ten minutes. Brennan kept the scores coming for the Cats with some sound free-taking but white flags from Andrew Shore and Morris kept Wexford in contention at half-time, 1-9 to 0-7. Killkenny hit three quick points from the restart, two superbly pucked frees from Brennan and a placed ball from Morris had the gap at eight points. Eoin Moore's determined performance at the back hardly saw him deserve to be on the losing side and that was underlined when he made his way up from centre-back to land an outstanding score for the Model County. Brennan and Breen continued to be the chief tormentors for Wexford though and they pointed all the way to the finish line for Kilkenny to ensure another Leinster crown was safe in the bag for their county.
