Munster MFC: Late Sweeney strike earns Tipp replay

July 06, 2008
Kerry 1-9 Tipperary 1-9 A coolly converted last minute free from Tipperary captain Conor Sweeney proved enough as the Premier County swept late to snatch a draw against Kerry in Sunday's ESB Munster MFC decider at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. It was Tipp who had taken the lead in the opening stages before full-forward Barry John Walsh finished off a move involving both Paul Geaney and Cian Tobin to net Kerry's goal on ten minutes and help his side set up a five-point advantage at the break with the scores at 1-6 to 0-4. Both sides traded points for the restart, keeping the gap at five, until a goal from Tipp midfielder Alan Moloney cut the deficit to two for the Premier County 11 minutes from the end. Sweeney and Michael Dwyer both raised white flags after, putting their side level before Barry John Walsh's superbly taken free from the acutest of angles looked to have stolen a win for the Kingdom. However a 30 metre free, brought in for dissent on the Kerry defence's part, provided Sweeney with the chance to be the hero in the final minute and the corner-forward showed great composure in slotting the ball over and earn his side a replay, which has been provisionally fixed for Ennis next Saturday.
