Ulster MFC: Monaghan book final spot
July 06, 2008
Monaghan advanced to meet Tyrone in the ESB Ulster MFC final on July 20 following a five-point win over last year's All-Ireland runners-up Derry on Saturday evening.
Monaghan.1-14
Derry....1-9
The Farneymen were the better side throughout with two points each from Kieran Hughes, Aaron McCarey and Christopher McGuinness ensuring them of a 0-8 to 0-6 interval lead.
They had extended their advantage to four points by the time Derry's Lee Moore scored a penalty in the 45th minute to make it a one-point game. But Monaghan kept their composure and some excellent scores from Kieran Hughes and a brilliant solo goal by Pete Dooney put the result beyond doubt.
Scorers - Monaghan: P Dooney 1-2 (1 '45), K Hughes 0-6 (3f), C McGuinness 0-3, A McCarey 0-2, P O'Callaghan 0-1. Derry: L Moore 1-4 (1-0 pen, 2f), G McGeehan 0-2 (2f), G O'Neill, A Mullan, N McFeeley 0-1 each.
Referee: G Walsh (Antrim).
