Seniors Claim First League Victory Our senior team tasted league victory at the fifth attempt last Sunday in the park after a hard fought game with Allen Gaels. After an entertaining tussle we emerged victorious on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-10. The foundations for victory were laid in the first half when we availed of the breeze to lead by 10 points to 4 at the break. This strong showing saw all six of our forwards find the target from open play with Benny O' Rourke also slotting over a free from 35 yards out. While the first half saw some stylish play and some good scores taken the second half was all about digging in and consolidating our lead against a physically strong Gaels team and the breeze. The visitors started the second half well and two quick points saw them narrow the deficit after five minutes. Then we had a stroke of good fortune when a speculative ball from Noel Doonan deceived Gaels keeper Kevin Nolan and ended up in the back of the net on eight minutes. This gave us a seven point advantage and the confidence to play on for the win that we badly needed. Two points form Gary Reynolds with a free from Ciaran Flynn were the only other scores that we registered in the second half and this is probably something we need to improve on. However, what was evident last Sunday was a great team spirit and unity of purpose throughout the squad. Training has stepped up in recent weeks and this was very evident particularly in the second half. Well done to all concerned and keep up the good work. This defeat leaves us with a serious battle on our hands to avoid relegation to division 5. Allen Gaels ran out six point winners on a scoreline of Carrigallen 1-12 Allen Gaels 2-15. The first half proved to be a tight affair and we trailed by just a point on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-9. The visitors, however, killed the game as a contest early in the second half scoring 1-3 without reply within 13 minutes. Points from Ciaran Flynn (2) and Hugh Magee gave us a glimmer of hope but another Gaels goal on 21 left us with a mountain to climb. Brian Doyle came off the bench to score what proved to be a consolation goal on 28 minutes. Team and subs: S Smith, D Lyons, B Reilly, P Harrington, D Reilly, M Dolan, K Davey, H Magee, D Mc Govern, C Reilly, E Dolan, K Wards, S Kenny, C Flynn, E O' Malley. Benny O' Rourke Snr RIP There was widespread sadness and regret in the parish two weeks ago with the sad passing of Benny O' Rourke senior after a lengthy battle with illness. Benny was one of our most reliable and staunch supporters over the last twenty years as he followed the progress of his son Bernard from under 12 to senior level. A good humoured man Benny was a regular in the dressing room and in the dugout at nearly every senior game and for years was a reliable umpire. Benny's popularity was very evident with the huge crowds that attended his removal and funeral, with Guards of Honour from the PTAA and Carrigallen GFC senior team. The sympathies of all in the club go to his son Bernard, a valuable member of our senior squad, and all his family at this sad time. May he rest in peace. Senior League Our senior team continue their league campaign this Friday evening when they play Mohill at 8pm. Please check fixture lists to confirm this. Your support would be appreciated. Our junior team are not playing this weekend. Minor Championship Our minor team begin their championship campaign this evening (Wednesday) when they travel to Kinlough to play Melvin Gaels at 7pm.
