Connacht MFC: Walsh the difference for Mayo

June 28, 2008
Mayo 1-13 Sligo 0-7 Mayo took their place in the ESB Connacht MFC decider last Saturday with comfort as they eased past Sligo by a nine-point margin at McHale Park, Castlebar. A tally of 1-6 from full-forward Aidan Walsh inspired the Westerners, with the only goal of the game coming 20 minutes from time to all but end any chance of the young Sligo men booking a place in the provincial final. Despite kicking an array of wides, Mayo led at the interval by 0-7 to 0-4 with Walsh pointing on five occasions in the opening 35 minutes along with Alex Corduff and Ray Geraghty raising their sole white flags for the match. Mayo quickly tagged on another score in the second-half without a Yeats' reply to pull four clear before Walsh netted on the quarter to hand a seven-point advantage to the hosts. Aidan O'Shea, Dean Gavin and the superb Cathal Freeman all pointed to assure that Mayo would be taking their place in this year's Connacht MFC final against Roscommon after the Rossies extra-time victory over Galway in Tuam at the weekend.
