McDonnell preparing for tactical battle

June 29, 2008
Armagh manager Peter McDonnell is bracing himself for a tactical battle in today's Ulster SFC semi-final against Down. McDonnell has watched the Mournemen on a number of occasions this year, and expects their forwards to try to prise openings in the Armagh defence by continually changing their style of attack. He said: "There is a tremendous degree of mobility in that Down team. This will be a real challenge to us. "At one stage in the replay (against Tyrone), Down played Paul McComiskey up on his own in a one-on-one situation. At other times, they had three in, and they had two in. "They have forwards who are involved in approach play. They have forwards who run far beyond the approach play. They drive from the half back line. Indeed, they will drive from their full back line. There was a clear demonstration of that against Tyrone when Liam Doyle ran from his 14-yard line and had a shot on the opposing 21-metre line." McDonnell said he wasn't entirely shocked by Down's replay win over reigning provincial kingpins Tyrone. "I watched Down play Derry in the final of the McKenna Cup. We also played them in a challenge match before Christmas," the primary school principal explained. "They went through the motions. We were doing very well, Then they showed a wee bit of their hand. "I made a comment to Ross (Carr) and Mickey Doyle after the game that they had plenty more. Ross just laughed it off with a bit of a blush. I am not totally surprised to see them in the semi-final."
