Leinster minor hurling round-up

May 18, 2008
Wexford proved too strong for Offaly, while Carlow overcame Meath in Saturday's ESB Leinster minor hurling championship action. At Wexford Park, Michael O'Hanlon bagged 1-8 as the home side overwhelmed Johnny Pilkington's Offaly on a 1-19 to 1-7 scoreline to qualify for the last four. O'Hanlon's goal after eight minutes helped Wexford to an early 1-4 to 0-0 lead and they went on to lead by 1-8 to 0-5 at half-time. Offaly brought themselves back into it with a Thomas Bolger goal two minutes after the restart, but that was as close as they came as Wexford went on to outscore the visitors by 0-10 to 0-2 in the remaining 28 minutes. Despite fading in the last 20 minutes, Carlow defeated Meath by 0-17 to 1-10 at Dr Cullen Park to set up a semi-final meeting with Kilkenny. The Barrowsiders dominated the first half to lead by 0-12 to 0-5 at half-time, but Meath - who shocked Laois in their rescheduled clash last Tuesday - made a real fight of it in the second half and outscored the home side by 1-4 to 0-1 in the final 20 minutes with substitute Malcolm Doyle scoring the only goal in injury-time. Elsewhere, Mayo booked their place in the Connacht minor football final with a 0-12 to 0-8 victory over 2006 All-Ireland champions Roscommon. The win also assures Mayo of a place in the All-Ireland quarter-finals. And in the Ulster minor football league final replay at Kingspan Breffni Park, Aussies Rules target Kyle Coney scored 1-4 as Tyrone defeated Leinster semi-finalists Meath by 1-10 to 0-11.
