McGrath the Banner hero

May 01, 2008
Conor McGrath's last-gasp pointed free handed Clare a dramatic victory over Cork in the ESB Munster minor hurling championship at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Wednesday night. Clare...2-17 Cork...2-16 Last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists Cork entered the tie as favourites and they got off to a great start when Paul Haughney's goal helped them to a 1-1 to 0-1 lead after five minutes. Clare full forward Darach Honan replied with a brace of goals before Simon O'Brien bagged 1-2 for the Rebels to leave them a point in arrears at the interval, 2-9 to 2-10. Cork had wind advantage in the second half and they quickly took the lead with points from Aidan Walsh and Ciaran Sheehan. However, Clare dug deep and Conor McGrath tied up the scoring at 2-16 apiece in the 58th minute. A replay looked on the cards at that stage, but the Banner weren't to be denied as McGrath fired them into the last four. For Cork, a qualifier date with Limerick awaits.
