Leinster MHC farce in Mullingar

April 14, 2008
Wicklow only fielded 13 players and were annihilated by Westmeath in Saturday's bizarre minor hurling championship match at Mullingar (9-22 to 0-0). The powers-that-be will ask some serious questions of the Garden County's approach to this game. They didn't come out for the second half, which will not go down well in the corridors of Croke Park. Wicklow's task became even more difficult when Keith Byrne had to withdraw due to a finger injury after only five minutes. Not a team to look a gift horse in the mouth, the Lake County mercilessly tore into the bedraggled opposition to lead by a whopping 49 points at the break. Stephen Boylan (3-3) and Stephen Barden (2-3) went to town for the winners, who managed more than a score a minute. Wicklow refused to come out for the second half, so referee Tim Anderson threw in the ball and sounded the final whistle.
