Canning handed Galway debut

April 09, 2008

Joe Canning Portumna and Galway
Joe Canning will make his long-awaited senior debut for Galway in Sunday's NHL semi-final against Cork at the Gaelic Grounds. The 19-year-old has turned down the opportunity to play for the senior side before now because of his underage and club commitments, but after winning a second All-Ireland club medal with Portumna in three years last month, he agreed to join the senior set-up. His introduction at full forward is one of three changes to the side that easily accounted for Limerick last time out. Fergal Moore, who was unavailable for that game, returns at corner back in place of Shane Kavanagh, while Canning's club-mate Damien Hayes replaces Kerill Wade at right corner forward. Aonghus Callanan is the player who indirectly makes way for Canning. Galway (SH v Limerick): J Skehill; C Dervan, T Og Regan, F Moore; A Cullinane, J Lee, G Mahon; K Hynes, R Murray; G Farragher, F Healy, N Healy; D Hayes, J Canning, I Tannian.
