Cavanagh the hero for Tyrone

March 20, 2008
A late Colm Cavanagh goal gave 14-man Tyrone a dramatic victory over Cavan in an absorbing Cadbury's Ulster under 21 football championship first round tie at Healy Park on Wednesday night. Tyrone..2-10 Cavan...1-10 The visitors looked to be on course for a shock victory when six frees from Raymond Galligan put them in a winning position, and their cause appeared to be helped by the dismissal of Danny McBride 11 minutes from the end. However, as so often proves to be the case, the 14-men rallied and did just enough to set up a last-four meeting with Down. Johnny Lafferty gave the Red Hands an early advantage when he goaled after seven minutes, but within two minutes Enda Gaffney replied with a similar score for the Breffnimen. With Aidan Cassidy and Shane O'Hagan dominant at midfield, however, Tyrone went on to lead by 1-5 to 1-2 at half-time. A more economical Cavan resumed with four points to leave the sides level on 1-6 apiece before Galligan's fourth converted free gave the visitors the lead for the first time 10 minutes into the second half. The game remained on a knife-edge until six minutes from the end when Cavanagh flicked Cathal McCarron's free to the net for the match-winning score. Tyrone - G. Kelly; N. McGinn, D. McBride, C.
