Building on their first ever appearance in a provincial minor final last year, Carlow progressed to the quarter-finals of the Cadbury's Leinster under 21 football championship with a slender victory over Longford at Dr Cullen Park. The only goal came on the stroke of half-time when corner forward Danny Molloy - who had blazed a penalty over the crossbar moments earlier - showed great composure to finish to the net. That score gave Carlow a 1-2 to 0-3 interval lead and, despite the best efforts of Longford's Mark Smith who scored 0-4, the home side held on for a narrow win.
