Counihan is new Cork football boss

February 19, 2008

Cork football manager Conor Counihan
Conor Counihan has been named as manager of the Cork senior football team. His prompt appointment shows that Cork officials are determined to put recent controversies behind tham as quickly as possible. The former Rebel County centre back was named this lunchtime as successor to Teddy Holland, who was removed from the position last night. The All Star No.6 was on the Leeside teams that claimed Sam Maguire in 1989 and 1990 and captained Imokilly to a Cork SFC in 1984. He is expected to name his backroom team before the weekend. Counihan is a former Cork captain and selector and he expressed a previous interest in the manager's job in 2003 only to be beaten in a vote by the returning Billy Morgan. The Aghada manager was at one point favourite to succeed Larry Tompkins in the hotseat, but was edged out once his former mentor came into the frame.
