GAA and AFL to consider IRS future

February 07, 2008
The GAA and the AFL met concerning the possible resumption of the International Rules Series with both parties set to discuss the topics discussed with their governing bodies. There was no confirmation that the series, which was cancelled in 2007 due to increasing levels of violence in the previous two years, will be back in 2008 but rather the scene is set for further negotiations. Both sporting organizations are keen to see the international game return but the GAA have told the AFL that further scenes of disciplinary chaos can not be allowed to happen. The G.A.A. was represented by Nickey Brennan, Pat Daly and Anthony Tohill. The AFL was represented by Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou and Kevin Sheehan. The meeting focused largely on the issue of playing rules, including disciplinary issues, and the overall organisation and regulation of any new series. Both parties will now report back to their respective controlling bodies. The next meetings of Coiste Bainistí / Ard Chomhairle are scheduled for the 15th/16th February, while the next scheduled AFL Board meeting is set for the 17th Feb. Both parties said there would be no further comment on thes matter until both controlling bodies have considered the reports from Nickey Brennan (G.A.A.) and Andrew Demetriou (AFL).
