Unionist paper to resume GAA coverage

January 29, 2008
One of the newspapers most closely identified with the Unionist tradition in the North has resumed its coverage of Gaelic games after years of ignoring the various codes. The Belfast-based News Letter famously failed to cover some of Ulster GAA's biggest days in recent times, including Tyrone's 2005 Sam Maguire Cup-winning exploits. However last week the newspaper covered a McKenna Cup match and its editor Darwin Templeton says the decision to resume coverage is to provide a better service to readers. "Until quite recently the News Letter did have a tradition of covering GAA," Mr Templeton explained. "This was a practice that was stopped a number of years ago for a number of different reasons before I was involved with the paper. "I don't think we will pretend to offer the same extent of coverage that other papers including the Irish News do. But we are always looking at ways of improving our service to our readers."
