Ronan McGarrity, who overcame a cancer scare last year, has been appointed Mayo captain for the coming season. The Ballina Stephenites midfielder was named as the new captain over the weekend, but won't skipper the side until after his club's interest in the All-Ireland championship is ended. Ballina will face Nemo Rangers for a place in the All-Ireland club final on February 17. McGarrity played a starring role in Ballina's Mayo and Connacht championship wins last autumn, but before that he had spent four months recuperating from treatment for testicular cancer that he was diagnosed with last March. Mayo manager John O'Mahony said: "Ronan impressed many people with his attitude last year and the way he dealt with his illness. He is a strong character and I'm sure he will be a strong captain too." Tweet
