Students teach Mayo a lesson

January 07, 2008
NUIG 2-9 Mayo 0-14 Mayo were shot down by one of their own as Mark Ronaldson helped NUIG to a winning start in the FBD Connacht league at Ballinrobe on Sunday, January 6th. Ronaldson scored a crucial goal in the dying minutes of the match to inflict a defeat on John O'Mahony's charges, although the Mayo manager will be pleased with the performance of a number of fringe players. A converted penalty by Sean Armstrong in the 20th minute helped NUIG to a 1-5 to 0-2 lead as Mayo took time to find their feet against the rampant students. However, a resurgent Mayo side took the game by the scruff of the net in the second half and chipped away at the deficit to such an extent that they took the lead in the 58th minute for the first time in the match. Points from Austin O'Malley, Peader Gardiner, Alan Dillon Michael Mullins and James Gill brought the home side right back into the match and it looked as if they would go on and win it at that stage. To their credit, the students fought back and Ronaldson's goal proved to be the winning score after a mistake by Mayo goalkeeper Tom Higgins.
