Tyrone minor Coney to attend Sydney trial
December 07, 2007
Tyorne minor star Kyle Coney will travel to Australia next June for a two-week trial with the Sydney Swans.
The 17-year-old Ardboe clubman is the latest young GAA star to be targeted by an Australian Rules club, and could soon be linking up with Tadhg Kennelly and Carlow's Brendan Murphy at the Sydney club. The news is a major blow to Tyrone manager Mickey Harte - a fierce opponent of the International Rules series - who was expected to bring Coney into his squad in the next couple of years.
"They have been in contact," Coney confirmed.
"I have good opportunities here so I am going to keep an open mind and not rush into any decisions.
"I have been looking at the game, watching videos and speaking to a few people. I am interested in it. I've been speaking to Peter Canavan and Anthony Devlin - a teacher here in school - to see what they think of it.
"Peter thought it was a good opportunity to get paid for something you like. I was over the moon with it."
It's understood that Swans' scouts watched Coney play on several occasions, including this year's All-Ireland minor quarter-final defeat to Kerry.
"They told me they were happy enough with what they saw, and if I wanted to pursue a career I could."
