October 30, 2007
The official Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Football for 2007 has been announced by the Gaelic Players Association. The team is dominated by seven Kerry men while Dublin have three representatives and there are also awards for Meath, Tyrone, Cork, Derry and Monaghan. All-Ireland champions Kerry have Marc Ó Sé, Tomás Ó Sé, Darragh Ó Sé, Declan O'Sullivan, Paul Galvin, Aidan O'Mahony and Colm Cooper on the side. Three Dublin players are included on the team - Stephen Cluxton, Barry Cahill and Alan Brogan while losing All-Ireland finalists Cork have Nicholas Murphy included at midfield. The remaining places are filled by Tyrone's Conor Gormley, Meath's Darren Fay, Derry's Paddy Bradley and Monaghan's Thomas Freeman. Chairman of the Football Selection Committee, Jack O'Connor, congratulated the winners whom, he said, had provided so much entertainment for GAA supporters throughout the season, "Gaelic football is a team game, but these awards recognise the outstanding contribution of some very skilful individuals during the course of the year. On the football committee, we selected who we felt were the three most deserving nominees for each position on the Opel Football Team of the Year, and the players then had the final say. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the recipients on this year's team. To be honoured by your peers is the one of the most satisfying rewards for any footballer." Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the Gaelic Players' Association said, "Players' player awards will always have a special place in the hearts of footballers and hurlers so I would like to congratulate the 15 winners who were chosen from the 45 nominees by their fellow players. Of course no player can be singled out without the assistance of his team-mates and fellow panellists who also deserve special mention as do all the participants in the 2007 football championship. Sincere thanks to Opel for their outstanding sponsorship and to the selection committee for its work throughout the season." Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, "I am delighted to reward the Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for their achievements during the course of the championship. It is great to see their peers acknowledge these fifteen individuals' contributions on and off the pitch. I look forward to meeting them, along with the Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Hurling, in Citywest on November 2nd". The 2007 Opel Gaelic team of the Year for Football in full consists of: 1.
