The GPA Awards for September
The official Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Hurling for 2007 has been announced today by the Gaelic Players Association. The team reflects the most successful counties in this year's championship, with 15 players hailing from four different counties - Kilkenny, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford.
All-Ireland champions Kilkenny have seven representatives - Michael Kavanagh, Jackie Tyrell, Tommy Walsh, James" Cha" Fitzpatrick, Eddie Brennan, Henry Shefflin and Martin Comerford. Losing All-Ireland finalists Limerick have four players included - Stephen Lucey, Mark Foley, Ollie Moran and Andrew O'Shaughnessy. The remaining places on the 2007 Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Hurling are filled by three Waterford players - Ken McGrath, Michael Walsh and Dan Shanahan and the sole Wexford representative, Damien Fitzhenry.
Commenting on the announcement, Chairman of the Hurling Selection Committee, Donal O'Grady, said "2007 was a fantastic year for hurling and I salute all involved. As a committee we made sure that the three most deserving nominees were picked for each position on the Opel Hurling Team of the Year. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the recipients on this year's team. To be honoured by your peers is the one of the highest accolades available in hurling."
Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the Gaelic Players' Association said, "Congratulations to the 15 winners on receipt of this endorsement from their fellow players. Next to an All-Ireland medal, this is the most prestigious award for an individual hurler but while recognising these outstanding achievements we must also acknowledge the contribution of all their team-mates during this year's thrilling championship."
Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, "The contributions of the fifteen individuals named on the Opel Gaelic Team of the Year for Hurling during the course of the championship have been rightly recognised by their peers and I am delighted to be in a position to reward them. I look forward to meeting the entire team at the gala event on November 2nd in Citywest."
