Kildare's Moorefield began the defence of their Leinster club football title with a comfortable first round victory over Wexford champions Clongeen at Conneff Park, Clane. Moorefield...0-15 Clongeen...0-8 Clongeen, who were crowned Wexford SFC winners for the first time last weekend, forfeited home advantage in order to get the game brought forward by a week to facilitate star player Paddy Colfer's stag party in Edinburgh. But they were always playing second fiddle to a stronger and more purposeful Moorefield side who eased to a second round clash with Longford's Dromard. The visitors took the lead through Gary O'Brien, but after drawing level in the 11th minute, Moorefield streaked clear to lead by 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time. Clongeen battled hard, with Colm Byrne to the fore for them, but Moorefield won most of the breaks around midfield and four unanswered points from sub Frank Hanniffy, Jason Phillips, Philip Woulfe and Kevin Murnaghan put them nine points ahead at the end of the third quarter.
