Ulster minor final ends in controversy

July 15, 2007
Tyrone beat Derry by a point in the 2007 Ulster MFC final at Clones but the Oak Leafers are going to appeal the verdict. The O'Neill men claimed the silverware with a 0-10 to 1-6 success thanks to an injury time point from Cathal McCrory. However, Derry have objected as they insist that an earlier point from Cormac Arkinson was in fact wide. Gavin McGeehan registered the only goal of the match for the Foylesiders, who seemed to have earned a replay when James Kielt brought them level with two late points. But defender McCrory popped up with a late winner, to hand the O'Neill County a victory that their neighbours and deadly rivals insist they did not deserve. There is a strong belief that Arkinson's 20th-minute effort was well wide, despite the umpire's flag, and Derry would appear to have every reason for frustration as only one point separated the sides at the final whistle. However, the appeal may not get them far as both teams progress to the All-Ireland series anyway and the trophy has already been presented to Tyrone captain Aidan Girvin. Big full forward McGeehan gave Derry an early boost with his sixth-minute goal and the Oak Leaf led by 1-3 to 0-4 at the interval. Paddy McNeice clipped four points for the winners, building on an impressive 1-4 semi-final haul against Armagh.
