Late arrival ends Higgins career

Wexford's Nigel Higgins
Wexford captain Nigel Higgins looks to have played his last game in a purple and yellow jersey after manager John Meyler axed him from the panel after he turned up 15 minutes late for training last Thursday night. Meyler has been a fantastic servant to the Model County's hurling side and captained them in their last two outings against Dublin and Kilkenny but Meyler has revealed that Higgins will no longer feature in his plans for the All-Ireland series with veteran goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry now expected to take up the captaincy. Wexford will meet the winners of Cork and Tipperary in the All-Ireland quarter-final but Meyler stated that he will not use Higgins in the remaining outings. ''The matter has been dealt with internally. Higgins will not be a part of our plans for the quarter-final,'' Meyler said.
