Golden point from Goulding seals Cork win

May 06, 2007
A late, late point from Daniel Goulding helped propel Cork to this year's Cadbury's All-Ireland Under 21 FC title (2-10 to 0-15) at the expense of a gritty Laois side at Semple Stadium, Thurles. In a thrilling encounter, the sides were level on eight occasions before Goulding's injury-time winner decided the issue. The tone was set for the game from the opening 25 minutes during which time the scores were level on five occasions. David Conway opened the scoring with a point for Laois in the 6th minute but it proceeded to be a case of tit-for-tat thereafter. Further points from John O'Loughlin and Niall Donoher and MJ Tierney gave Laois further impetus but points from Colm O'Neill, Daniel Goulding (three) and Fiachra Lynch left it 0-5 apiece six minutes before the interval. The midlanders then seemed to steal a march on their opponents with three points without reply through David Conway and MJ Tierney (two). However the Rebel County hit back with interest just before the interval with the aforementioned Goulding bagging a fine goal to tie the scores at half-time, 1-5 to 0-8. Laois notched the opening point of the second half but Goulding with a 45 and a free saw Cork regain the lead. With six minutes left to play Laois held a 0-14 to 1-9 advantage with man of the match MJ Tierney chipping in with three points. Then a timely goal from Cork's Colm O'Neill levelled matters yet again only for Goulding's late strike to nick victory for the Munstermen at the death.
