Magnificent Mayo breeze to Connacht success

April 08, 2007
Mayo remain firmly on course to retaining their All-Ireland under 21 football title after an emphatic Connacht final victory over Roscommon at McHale Park, Castlebar. Mayo………1-22 Roscommon…1-8 The Mayo attack was simply too sharp and powerful for a Roscommon team that included a number of last year's All-Ireland minor winning side. Centre forward Pierce Hanley was on fire for the winners, scoring 0-5 from play and 0-9 overall. The dominance exerted by Barry Moran and Tom Parsons at midfield was also central to Mayo's big win. Mayo made a whirlwind start and quickly built up an eight-point lead with their goal coming from Parsons in the eighth minute. Roscommon, though, finished the half strongly, scoring 1-2 without reply to trail by 1-10 to 1-5 at the break. The Ros' goal was scored by Cathal Cregg in the 26th minute. But Mayo soon regained the upper hand following the resumption and with Hanley running riot on the '40', the game was over as a contest with 15 minutes to go.
