Following formlines can be a tricky thing. On the first week of the football league, Donegal went down to Cork and beat the hosts comprehensively in a Saturday night clash in Páirc Uí Rinn. Some two weeks later the Northerners travelled to Healy Park in Omagh and were on the receiving end of an eight point beating at the hands of the hosts Tyrone. So far so good, it all makes sense. That is until eleven days ago when Tyrone travelled to Cork and this time it was the Rebels who came away with the points, once again winning in a fashion that left no doubt as to who was the better team.
So we have three teams, each of whom has won once and lost once against each other, making it very tricky to establish a clear line on which side is in the better form. What is very clear is that so far two of those three teams have beaten the Dubs, and this week Cork get the chance to make it three out of three - and with Ladbrokes offering 6/4 about them doing so, it's a bet worth taking. After some excellent performances in the O'Byrne Cup and in the first half of their opening NFL match against Tyrone, it's been all downhill for the boys in blue so far this season. Their solitary league win came in Limerick, a one point win salvaged deep in injury time with by a Mossy Quinn 45. Limerick are proving very competitive this year, but they are not a top tier team and with Cork back on form after a patchy start, it would be a big improvement on anything the Dubs have done so far if they were to get a result against the Rebels. It could happen, but at 6/4 we'd prefer to bet on current form to continue.
Having successfully nominated Queen's to take the Sigerson Cup last week on the strength of their having a much easier run to the final (this made all the difference as UUJ had to face into consecutive periods of extra time) we're going to repeat the trick this weekend and nominate NUI Galway as the value bet for the Fitzgibbon cup. The boys from the west are currently on offer at 9/4 with Ladbrokes and while it will require an upset for them to lift the trophy, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility. Their semi final, with all due respect to DIT, should be a formality. DIT pulled off an upset to take out St. Pat's college in the quarter final, but they should pose very few problems for NUIG. In the other semi, raging hot favourites Limerick IT play UL in what should be an excellent local derby. The IT, coached by Davie Fitzgerald, have a star studded line up that makes them deserved favourites, but this game could prove to be a banana skin, and even if they do negotiate the hurdle, it's quite likely that they will be all the more vulnerable in the final having had a tough semi under their belts only the previous day.
