Tierney the difference as Laois U21s prevail

February 19, 2007
Corner forward Michael Tierney was star of the show as Laois beat Wicklow by 0-11 to 1-5 in the Cadbury's Leinster U21 FC at Aughrim. The No.13 was on target five times, easing his county into the second round of the provincial knockout competition with an impressive display of scoretaking. Laois led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break but this match was anything but clear cut. In fact, the Garden County might well have progressed had they made better use of the opportunities that came their way. Kiltegan midfielder Rory Finn grabbed a second-half goal for the underdogs, who could well have forced a replay if corner forward Dean Odlum hadn't missed another good Wicklow goalscoring chance. Odlum, who scored three fine points over the hour, found himself in a one-on-one with O'Moore keeper Colin Munnelly but elected to fist the ball to the net. Such a score could not stand and Laois marched on.
