Nire deny Stradbally record
November 13, 2006
Stradbally's bid for a record sixth successive Waterford SFC title was dashed by Nire in a low-scoring county final at Dungarvan.
Nire……….1-5
Stradbally…0-3
An injury-time goal from substitute Diarmuid Wall finally broke Stradbally's stranglehold on the Waterford football crown. Favoured by a strong breeze in the first half, Nire built up a 0-4 to 0-1 interval lead thanks to points from Connie Power, Brian Wall and Liam Lawlor. Stradbally's solitary first half point was scored by Tony Grey. Indeed, the challengers would have been further in front but for two excellent saves by Stradbally goalkeeper Eoin Cunningham.
Niall Curran reduced the gap with a free in the 35th minute, but a further 18 minutes had elapsed before Shane Walsh scored the next point for Nire. A superb point from Stephen Cunningham with six minutes remaining kept Stradbally in the hunt, but their fate was sealed by Wall's late strike.
