The GPA Awards for September
Kieran Donaghy (Kerry) and James Fitzpatrick (Kilkenny) have been honoured with the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Awards for September in Football and Hurling respectively. Chairman of the Football Selection Committee, John O'Mahony, wasn't in the least bit surprised to see Donaghy get the players' vote in the wake of his pivotal performances on the edge of the square. "Kieran Donaghy's switch to full-forward was the move of the summer, but this wasn't just about pumping high ball into a big man. Not only has Kieran proven his ability in the air, but the Austin Stacks giant has shown he isn't short on football skill or vision - mark how he had the presence of mind to lay the ball off for Declan O'Sullivan's goal in the All-Ireland final and then score his own with a clinical finish. A footballer of many talents, for sure." O'Mahony stated. Chairman of the Hurling Selection Committee, Donal O'Grady, said that the choice of 'Cha' Fitzpatrick as the September Hurler of the Month was most deserving as it reflected Kilkenny's return to the top of hurling's ladder. "If Cork were to be toppled, it was imperative for Kilkenny that they got on top of the Rebels' midfield and they managed to do this with the help of Cha's dynamism, skill and determination. He must have covered every inch of Croke Park in the final and foraged for every ball. Just a week later, he converted six frees in the drawn All-Ireland U21 final and six days afterwards, he helped the Cats beat Tipp in the replay. Clearly, a young man who will be around for a long time." O'Grady commented. Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the GPA, said The players have spoken and Kieran Donaghy and James Cha Fitzpatrick have been chosen as the Opel Gaelic Players of the Month for September.  Both individuals performances were phenomenal in each of the respective finals and I would expect to see their names on the shortlists for the team of the year awards.   Commenting on the announcement, Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, "It is fantastic to see Kieran Donaghy and James Fitzpatrick s names added to the list of recipients of the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Awards.  Both players were outstanding as their teams triumphed this month and Opel is delighted to be in a position to reward their achievements."
