Roscommon captain David Flynn raises the Tom Markham Cup
Over 10,000 ecstatic Roscommon fans braved the rain to welcome home the new All-Ireland minor football champions on Saturday night. There was a huge outpouring of emotion as the Tom Markham Cup returned to the county after a 55-year absence. It was after midnight when team captain David Flynn hoisted the cup in Roscommon town square and he was joined on the stage by Barry Molloy, who captained the 1951 side. "When we brought the cup home in 1951, the captain of the previous Roscommon team to win it - Bill Carlos in 1941 - presented me with this," said Molloy, as he brandished a huge cap in the primrose and blue of Roscommon. "And now I am happy to hand this cap over to today's captain David Flynn." Manager Fergal O'Donnell told the throng: "We have put the last eight or nine months of our lives on hold - but it was all worth it to see the kind of happiness we witnessed in Ennis today and tonight."
