Curran points the way for Kingdom

August 20, 2006
Kerry minor full forward Paddy Curran was unstoppable in their semi-final clash with Donegal scoring 1-6 as the Kingdom progressed to the All-Ireland minor final after a 2-13 to 1-10 victory against their Northern counterparts. The Munster men are in with a chance of capturing their first All-Ireland minor title in twelve years after impressing in Croke Park. Donegal started the brightest midfielder as Ross Wherity pointed after a quick free kick. They quickly added to that score, before Curran had the side's level ten minutes in with a brace of points. For the next ten minutes it was all Kerry as they assumed control on the pitch but didn't show it on the scoreboard. Five wides were kicked and a superb point from Eoin Kennedy was their only reward for the spell of dominance. Donegal made up for lost time by kicking four points in a row with two of them coming from the boot of Martin McElhinney and that scoring blitz left the scoreline 0-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes. The games changing point came in the 28th minute of the match as Kerry were on the comeback trail. Donegal's Dualtach Molloy beat a few players brilliantly only to have his week effort saved by the Kerry goalkeeper. That missed opportunity didn't stop Kerry's blaze of scores at the end of the first half as the Kingdom ensured a wonderful comeback by hitting four unanswered points and going into the interval leading 0-7 to 0-6. Kerry started where they left off as Paddy Curran had the opening score of the second half. Donegal replied with a point when a serious goal chance was there for the taking. James Doolan was introduced for the Munster side and he had an instant effect as the Dr. Crokes man had the first goal of the game after Eoin Kennedy brilliantly set him up. Doolan's goal sent them on their way as Kerry gained control in most areas of the pitch. Paddy Curran rounded off a fantastic display with a goal created again by Kennedy. A late goal from Donegal's McElhinny served more as a consolation; the final scoreline finished Kerry 2-13, Donegal 1-10.
