Galway on course for hat-trick

August 06, 2006
Galway are still on course for a hat-trick of All-Ireland MHC titles following their 2-12 to 0-16 semi final win over Cork at Croke Park. The challengers worked hard all through but didn't actually get their noses in front until the 48th minute. And the Rebel County might well have went onto secure victory after midfielder Lee Desmond eased Cork into a 0-15 to 1-10 lead with a brace of points inside a minute. However a brilliant sideline cut from Joe Canning - scorer of 1-8 in total - in the 54th minute was added to by a fine Sean Coen goal which fairly re-installed the westerners in the driving seat. Galway's race for the finishing line stumbled though when Robert White's point for Cork made for a grandstand finish to the game. But goalkeeper James Skehill came to the rescue for the Connacht lads by firing an injury time free over the bar from over 100 yards. Galway benefited from a whirlwind start with a Canning goal putting the winners elect into a 1-3 to 0-0 cushioned lead. Cork fought their way back into the game and by half-time were only four points adrfit, 0-7 to 1-8.
