Kilkenny stroll to minor title

July 02, 2006
Kilkenny minors captured the Leinster title after defeating Carlow in the final on Sunday July 2. Carlow deservedly reached the final after defeating the likes of Wexford and Offaly on their way. The final score-line of 4-22 to 1-5 may seem harsh to many but it does show just how dominant the young cats were in Croke Park. They never relaxed on the lead they had throughout and showed a keen eye for goal with Richie Hogan being the star of the show with 2-10 to his name. Kilkenny raced into an early lead as they led by 0-6 to 0-0 after ten minutes of play. Mark Bergin led the way with two wonderful 65's. Carlow's first score of the game came from Paudie Kehoe after 13 minutes but they struggled to find their range after this. Richie Hogan terrorised the Carlow defence as he knocked over six points in the opening half. A second score from Carlow left the scoreline 0-13 to 0-2 in favour of Kilkenny at half time. Carlow's chances of a fight back died within the first 10 minutes of the second half. Jonjo Farrell found the net for Kilkenny and to make matters worse for Carlow Derek Byrne received his second yellow of the match and was sent to the stands. Kilkenny continued to dominate and goals from Richie Hogan (2) and Neil Anthony (1) ensured the Cats were runaway winners.
