Slattery and Kelly win the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Awards for May
Karol Slattery (Offaly) and Eoin Kelly (Tipperary) have been honoured with the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Awards for May in Football and Hurling respectively. The announcement was made on Tuesday 27th June at the Fitzwilliam Hotel in St. Stephens Green, Dublin.
Commenting on Karol Slattery's Award, John O'Mahony, Chair of the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month judging panel for football, said, "The Offaly captain led by example in his county's first two games of the summer. His experience played a huge part in the win over Westmeath, making sure his defensive colleagues kept their heads after Offaly had been reduced to 14 men. His influence was even more telling against Kildare as he gave a masterclass in wing-back play - defending solidly
as well as sweeping forward on several occasions and hitting two points from play." Slattery will lead out his side this Sunday against Wexford in a match which is sure to be a thriller.
Similarly, hurling judging panel chair Donal O'Grady outlined the reasons behind Eoin Kelly's Award; "Over the past couple of years, we have become accustomed to the highest standards from Eoin Kelly, but the Mullinahone man has surpassed himself this year with sensational scoring exploits. His stellar display against
Limerick, in which he notched 14 points (0-5 from play), had many talking about him in the same breath as some of the game's legends. A great exponent of every attacking skill in the book, he is a forward that aspiring young hurlers can learn from." Kelly was part of the Tipperary side which lost against Cork in the Munster hurling final on Sunday. Kelly scored 0-7 in the course of the match to take his tally to 2-28 for the season.
Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the GPA, said "I am delighted to announce Karol and Eoin as the Opel Gaelic Players of the Month for May. Their recent efforts on the pitch have been well recognised and we are pleased to reward their achievements today."
Speaking at the awards, Dave Sheeran Managing Director, Opel Ireland, commented "Today's winners highlight exactly why Opel choose to support the GPA. The Opel Gaelic Players Awards are awarded to the players by their peers and recognise the excitement that they create throughout the playing season. Karol and Eoin have put in countless hours of training and travelling in their bids to succeed at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a position to showcase their efforts."
