Higgins proud of honour
May 08, 2006
Mayo under-21 captain Keith Higgins became the first man from the county to receive an All-Ireland trophy in 21 years and the dual star admitted he was overwhelmed by the occasion.
Higgins played a starring role for Mayo as they defeated Cork by two-points to claim the title. The Westerners had become the butt of some cruel jokes over their inability to land a major All-Ireland title in recent years, but Higgins admitted it was worth the wait.
"Oh yeah, this definitely makes up for it," said Higgins. "This makes up for every bit of training you'd have done since you were under-12. It's brilliant, we've had a lot of heartbreak in Mayo and maybe this is the start of a great year for us.
"There's already people saying we won it on the line and that's true. The management made key changes; the lads who came in were brilliant."
