Stradbally oh so Nire

November 13, 2005
The Nire had to produce a grandstand finish at Dungarvan to deny Stradbally the Waterford SFC title after the sides finished at 0-6 apiece in a cracking county final. In what was a thoroughly entertaining if not exactly high quality clash in front of 4,000 fans, Stradbally very nearly realised their dream of winning the title for a record equalling fifth successive year. Indeed the champions seemed well on course after Niall Cullen fired over a long range point in the 57th minute to edge his side two points in front. But within seconds of Cullen's effort, the impressive Shane Walsh curled over a superb point at the other end of the field. And with less than 60 seconds left to play, his brother Martin kicked the dramatic equaliser to set up a replay next weekend. The champions had earlier led by the odd point in nine at the interval with a Stephen Cunningham point bringing a tense first half to a close.
