One-man show keeps Nire hopes alive

Stradbally 0-8 Nire 1-5 The Waterford senior football final must go to a replay after Nire's Alan Lawlor single handily kept his side in the tie against defending champions Stradbally in Dungarvan on Monday, October 25th. Lawlor scored all eight of his side's points, seven of which came from placed balls, but the one from play by the half forward, three minutes from the end of the match was the most important. Despite having a strong wind advantage in the first half, Nire trailed at the interval by 1-2 to 0-2. The sides looked to be heading in at the break on level terms, only for a superb solo goal effort by Stradbally's Ger Power to give them a three point lead. The defending champions used the wind to their advantage in the opening minutes of the second half and stretched their lead to five points by the end of the third quarter. Lawlor's accuracy from free kicks brought Nire back into the match and reduced the deficit to one point as the game entered its final moments and the man-of-the-match held his nerve to level matters and send the game to a replay.
