Former Taoiseach and six-time Cork All-Ireland winner Jack Lynch.

Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of Cork's most famous sons - Jack Lynch.

The former Taoiseach and six-time Cork All-Ireland winning dual star was born in Shandon on August 15th, 1917.

A bona fide legend of the GAA fields, the Glen Rovers clubman's medal collection included five All-Ireland hurling medals, one All-Ireland football medal, 10 Cork SHC, three NHL, three Railway Cups, two Cork SFC and Dublin SFC souvenirs.

Captain in 1941, the midfielder won four All-Ireland medals in-a-row with the Cork senior hurling team up until 1944 and added a fifth in '46.

He was also in the Croke Park winners enclosure in 1945 as a member of the Cork football team that overcame Cavan by 2-5 to 0-7 thereby achieving the notable distinction of being on the winning side in six successive All-Ireland finals.

He scaled similar lofty heights in politics and, in 1966, was elected to replace Sean Lemass as leader of the Fianna Fail party and Taoiseach of Ireland.

The great Jack Lynch passed away on October 20th, 1999 and his legacy lives on in both the sporting and political spheres.
