Galway must fix kick-outs, says O'Mahony

Two-time All-Ireland winning manager John O'Mahony thinks Galway's season could be over on Saturday unless they fix the issues with their kick-outs from the Connacht SFC final defeat.

The Tribesmen lost their provincial crown after being stunned by Roscommon in Salthill two weeks ago and enter into this weekend's qualifier against Donegal as underdogs at Markievicz Park, where O'Mahony feels they'll need to alter things drastically from the tee.

"A lot of focus came on the goalkeeper but kick-outs are more to do with the system and nine or 10 players rather than just one," the 1998 and 2001 All-Ireland winner told The Irish News.

"There were reminders of it in the Mayo game but instead of eliminating it, it got worse in the Roscommon game. And even when they went long, Roscommon beat them in the air.

"Often you're looking at marginal things, but there's a real identifiable thing that if they do put it right, they certainly will be in with a chance. But if the mental attitude isn't right it'll be very difficult for them."

He added: "The Galway public are very demanding, and it was the manner of the defeat as much as the defeat itself that will make it difficult to go straight into playing Donegal.

"Donegal haven't been setting the world alight but at the same time they've won two games since they were beaten by Tyrone, so it'll be a big challenge for Galway - and for Kevin - to lift people."
