Former Galway hurling manager Anthony Cunningham is the early favourite to become the next Westmeath senior football manager.

The Lake County are on the look out following Tom Cribbin's decision to step down from the position after their campaign came to an end last Saturday week at the hands at Armagh.

Cribbin guided the county to two Leinster finals and gained promotion from Division Four this year, before suffering a record championship defeat to Dublin in the provincial semi-final.

Now, the county board begin the task of finding a new manager and Cunningham's name keeps cropping up in both social media and media print.

Cunningham guided Garrycastle to three consecutive county titles and a Leinster title in 2011 before reaching the All-Ireland club SFC final where they lost to Crossmaglen Rangers after a replay.

The former All-Ireland SHC winner also had considerable success with Roscommon side St Brigid's, while he works in Athlone and has a close association with Westmeath GAA.

However, it is yet to be revealed whether or not Cunningham would be interested in the position. Other names being mentioned at this early stage are former county star and current under-21 manager John Keane, former Donegal coach Jack Cooney, ex-Westmeath ladies manager Peter Leahy, Luke Dempsey, while an outside bet is former Fermanagh manager Pete McGrath.
