Liam Óg McGovern is expected to learn full extent of his latest knee injury later today (WEDS), although the Wexford hurler is hopeful that he's avoided more cruciate ligament damage.

McGovern suffered a cruciate tear on club duty last August, and was injured in training with the county last Saturday.

He's now set to miss out on Saturday's Leinster SHC semi-final against champions Kilkenny.

It was initially feared that the St Anne's clubman had suffered a repeat cruciate injury but sources close to the player indicated that he was more optimistic after visiting Santry's Sports Surgery Clinic yesterday.

McGovern returned to inter-county hurling when he appeared as a second half substitute in the recent Leinster quarter-final victory over Laois, and he's expected to be informed of scan results later today.

One of the stars of Wexford's 2016 campaign, and the late scoring hero in the qualifier victory over Cork, McGovern had been tipped for more game time against Kilkenny at the weekend, and possibly a start.

McGovern is not Wexford's only injury concern ahead of the sell-out Innovate Wexford Park showdown with the Cats.

Jack O'Connor hasn't trained since the Laois game after coming off with an ankle injury, while first-choice goalkeeper Mark Fanning missed the O'Moore Park victory with an infection.

Forward David Dunne, who came off the bench against Laois, is out after pulling a hamstring and Wexford have confirmed that defender Damien Reck could be out of action for another two months with an ankle problem.

Willie Devereux is rated at 50-50 with a hamstring problem but Podge Doran could make the 26-man match-day squad.

Doran has been struggling with a hip injury and while he trained last Saturday night, he reported some soreness afterwards, and his fitness will be assessed for the remainder of the week.
