'It's not Dublin he's training, it's Wicklow'

The performance of the Wicklow footballers and their manager Johnny Magee was under scrutiny at their most recent county board meeting.

Rathnew chairman Bobby Dignam didn't hold back when criticising Magee's preparation for the opening game against Leitrim.

"I really just can't figure out what we are going to do with the present set up. I watched a warm up that the likes of Dublin would do. Twenty minutes non stop running backwards and forwards across a pitch and then come out and run for 70 minutes on a heavy pitch. It's not Dublin he's training, it's Wicklow," Dignam told county board delegates.

"Also, the team selection. I can't understand what he's doing. We had six senior players on the subs bench, two from Blessington, two from Pat's and two from Bray. These men have played senior football in this county for the last ten years and they're not good enough to get on the county team.

"Honest to God, Chairman, it's so embarrassing to go up there, I've been at all the O'Byrne Cup games bar and, I mean, there is no progress."

He added: "I've been opposed to him for the length of term he's there and I'll oppose him until he's gone."

County Board chairman Martin Coleman believes that there are a lot of young lads coming through and they need time.

"It's not an overnight process. There's a lot of young players coming through and we have to be patient and give them time. We haven't the quality of players that we had eight or ten years ago."
