RTÉ's Group Head of Sports, Ryle Nugent says that the national broadcaster will do everything in their power to ensure that they maintain their current GAA rights.

At present, RTÉ broadcast 31 live football and hurling championship games each summer, but they are expected to come under heavy pressure from their rivals for game rights for the 2017-2020 period.

Speaking to the Sunday Business Post, Mr Nugent cited the rights as being paramount to RTÉ's sports coverage.

"The GAA rights are the single most important sports rights that we have," said Nugent.

"In my view, it is the most important relationship RTE has with an organisation. It is part of our culture and our heritage in addition to being a sports right. It should be at the heart of our sports coverage on TV, radio, online and news."

He added: "We will do everything within our power and abilities to ensure that we are central part of the GAA's media partners across all platforms into the future."
