Waterford manager Derek McGrath feels that the county's supporters need to be more understanding about the task in hand.

The Waterford manager has stressed that they will suffer a heavy defeat someway along the line as they continue their quest for some silverware.

A very young side reached the NHL final where they lost to Clare after a replay and the sides meet in this Sunday's Munster SHC semi-final.

McGrath believes that this side has plenty to learn along the way and their supporters must understand that.

"I think that they need the open mindedness to know that there's going to be a hammering on the way sometime," McGrath told the Waterford News & Star.

"We've done well to avoid that. Within our camp, we've treated every league game like an All-Ireland final.

"Our preparation has been like an All-Ireland final. I keep saying that there will be ups and downs and mentioning team building and work in progress and people are irked a small bit by that.

"That's my actual genuine belief that we need to be way better to get to where every team wants to go. We need to be able to implement things on the field that will happen more fluidly. I'll reference last year's All-Ireland semi-final against Kilkenny when we knew what we needed to do but couldn't do it. That sounds terribly amateurish from a management point of view but we couldn't fix it."
