Corrigan: high intensity games can stand to us

Ruairi Corrigan feels that playing in Division 2 of the Allianz League can stand Fermanagh in good stead for the championship.

Last year's championship surprise packets didn't look out of place in the second tier as they battled to retain their status for 2017.

"We've a good squad this year so we've had a number of in-house games within the squad and we believe that the games that we've played have had a high intensity and we've got a lot out of those games," Corrigan told the Irish News.

"I suppose we had a disappointing start [in the League] and we never got going in the second half against Derry in the first game.

"We wanted to play like we did against Tyrone in the majority of the games we played but we couldn't really reach those levels.

"Coming towards the end of the league campaign we were stuck in a relegation battle and we fought through and got two good results away to Galway and at home to Tyrone, and we felt that we deserved obviously to stay up in Division 2.

"It's going to bring the best out of you and that will stand to us when it comes to May 15 when we're playing Antrim. So it's really about making sure that we can play to the level that we were playing at against Tyrone and even higher for the championship but we know that that's going to be tough to do."

The Kinawley attacker is wary of the momentum Antrim built up during their successful Division 4 campaign.

"On paper they have a great team and they've been performing very well," he continued.

"They seem to be a tight-knit group this year more so than last year and they've got more boys back too like Kevin Niblock and the McCanns.

"They're experienced players and obviously quality players too so it's going to be a tough game in Brewster Park. Antrim will bring their 'A' game and hopefully we'll bring our 'A' game and we'll have to see what happens."
