Kerry giants bid to retain senior status

December 11, 2015

Austin Stacks take on Laune Rangers.

One of the most eagerly awaited club relegation play-offs will be held in Kerry this weekend.

The reason for this county SFC relegation receiving so much attention is the fact that it features two of the biggest club teams in Kerry, Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers.

Both have a long standing association with the top flight in Kerry football as Austin Stacks are looking to preserve their senior status which they've held since 1928, while Laune Rangers competed in the first county championship in 1889, but they broke their tenure and have been senior since 1970 now.

Kerry star Kieran Donaghy will be hoping to guide his team mates to safety, while the veteran Mike Frank Russell will be hoping to turn back the clock and give a vintage display to save his side from the drop.

A restructuring of the senior championship is one of the reasons these two are battling relegation, although Rangers have struggled in recent years.
