Galway's huge wides tally was a cause of concern for manager Anthony Cunningham after their victory over Cork.

The Tribesmen registered 23 wides, but still hit 2-28 in a 12-point win.

"It's good to have something to work on the next day," Cunningham said.

"We'll need, in a closer game, those to go over. We had to weather a storm there after half-time when Cork came flying back into it, but it was always going to be a high-scoring game against Cork.

"That's been the history of the clashes and it was no different today."

He added: "We're our own team, we've a lot of young guys coming along there. Whelo's (Conor Whelan) only 18 or 19 but stood up to it there. I don't think anybody really knew who he was before this. Cathal Mannion, Johnny Glynn, these guys are young you know. We just need time and patience and unfortunately we don't get that in Galway.

"There's pressure on everybody, it's a team game. There's pressure on everybody to score and that's the way it should be.

"We demand more of ourselves every day. We're our own worst critics inside in the dressing-room and inside in Athenry when we're training week-in, week-out. We're like every other team, we're striving to be the best that we can be and there's a long way to go yet.

"You look at the guys we had to bring in there today. Davy Collins and Fergal Moore, years of experience there to bring in. Niall Healy as well and Joey Cooney there at half-time. These guys are chomping at the bit. It's very competitive in training and that's the way that you want it to be."
