Mayo's heaviest defeat in Connacht MFC

There have been concerns raised about the state of Mayo underage football after Saturday night's 17-point drubbing by Galway in the Connacht MFC semi-final.

It was by far Mayo's biggest defeat in the provincial championship. Their previous heaviest losses came against Galway in 1937, '60, '70 and '94 when they lost by eight points.

Having reigned supreme in Connacht over the past two years and lifted the Tom Markham Cup two years ago, no-one saw last weekend's hammering coming, least not Mayo manager Enda Gilvarry.

"We didn't see that happening at all," the 2013 All-Ireland winning supremo said in the Western People.

"It's not that we expected an easy game, but that just didn't work out for us out there. I have no issue with the result.

"Galway were just much better than us on the day, but I feel sorry for the guys. Their huge efforts all year are not reflected in that scoreline and not reflected in that performance this evening. A lot of them are underage again next year and it'll be a learning curve for them."
